It may seem like the semicolon is struggling with an identity crisis. It looks like a comma crossed with a period. Maybe that’s why we toss these punctuation marks around like grammatical confetti; we’re confused about how to use them properly. Emma Bryce clarifies best practices for the semi-confusing semicolon.

Use a semicolon to replace a period between related sentences when the second sentence starts with either a conjunctive adverb or a transitional expression, such as for example, for instance, that is, besides, accordingly, furthermore, otherwise, however, thus, therefore.

Genuine questions:

1:38 Can, "I had no idea where to put them.", stand alone as a sentence? Doesn't it need more context, or is that a misconception?

Also, should I have put a comma after my quotation marks, and/or dropped the period in the quote? And should I have used 2 questions marks or one; or a semicolon to separate related questions, for example?

Edit: context being a more specific time and object. Am I way off here?

"I had no idea where to put my shoes, yesterday."

"I had no idea where to place semicolons, until I learned where."

And

"I had no idea where to put them."

All valid? Sorry to be pedantic, but I'm literally here to try to understand English a little better. Please correct any mistakes, lol. I think I can start with sentences with "and" because it's an extremely casual and conversational context (i.e., a youtube comment).

Comma = pause
Semi colon = long pause
