How to safely jump start a vehicle with a dead battery, and the correct way to hook up jumper cables.

Having to jump start a dead battery in a vehicle is something no one really likes to have to experience. It’s something that happens so infrequently, that when you’re faced with having to do it, you may not remember the best way to go about hooking everything up. It’s important to know how to jump start a car, or any vehicle for that matter, and I’ll show you how to do that in this video in a very safe way. It may seem like a simple thing to do to many of you, but there are some wrong ways to do it that could cause damage to the vehicles involved, and possibly injury to yourself. I also discuss types of jumper cables, and even portable jump starters and power banks that can be great to have when there’s no other vehicle around to help you jump start your car.

Do I turn off the engine of the donor battery car when I try to start the dead battery car? And is it safe to remove the cables when both engines are running?

George W says:

What about the order to disconnect the cables?

Dyehen Slevin Kelevra says:

Your video just saved my niece’s life, literally. God bless you !

Ld Azucenas says:

Hi stan, after starting the car with bad battery and once worked we will remove the cables in reverse order while the cars engine are on/running? Thank you so much

Evelyn Taveras says:

Wow never jumped started a car in my life but this video is a life saver thank you so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼

K. C. Alden says:

They should teach this as a required course in high school. I can't tell you how many times over the years people that helped me and my family with a jump start had sparks flying all over the place while they were doing it! When the jumper cables are not connected right, it can ruin the electrical system in the disabled car.

papamoney says:

thank you!! very clear instructions!

Haelian Rupasinghe says:

Thank you so much, may God bless you.

Lloneĺy Streets says:

Thank you, simple, easy to follow tutorial/directions! 👍

Mo Dallas says:

What about conflicting alternators?
I recently saw a video saying to let the good battery car run for a while, then turn it off and try starting the bad battery car. It's supposedly bad to have both alternators running at the same time.

Eric Klassen says:

Good step-by-step EXCEPT, after hooking up and letting the good car pre-charge the bad battery by running it, turn the engine off on the good car before trying to start the bad car. If you leave the good car running AND the interconnected bad car starts running and provide its own charge, you run the remote risk of blowing the diodes in the chrging system of the good car. If the bad car is going to start, it will start just fine off the good car's battery without the good car running. If, on the other hand, the bad car doesn't start, it wouldn't have started with the good car running. Why risk the good car?

Katrina Witt says:

Thanks, Dad! Excellent instruction video and information in the description box. I read on a forum that, if using the remote positive terminal on the good car, the negative lead can be attached to a heavy metal engine part on the the good car. So hook up is: red lead/bad car(+), red lead/good car(+), black lead/good car engine, black lead/bad car engine. Well, I tried that and, after running the good car for 5 minutes, nothing happened when I tried to start the bad car. Nada. 😔 The good car battery has side terminals which are hard to access. I wonder what I did wrong.🤔

Gary Graves says:

Always! Always! wear eye protection when working around batteries, especially when jumpstarting a vehicle with a dead one. The chance of a battery exploding may be remote, but it can, and does happen. I once saw a car battery explode in a man’s face as he was connecting jumper cables. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, so I don’t know whether or not he was permanently blinded but he was hurtin’ for certain..

Glynn Cassell says:

It's always a good idea to turn off the running vehicle before trying to start the bad one. You are basically putting a dead short on a charging alternator and may damage it.

Rick Constant says:

Two things I'd like to add: when you attach the clamps, give them a wiggle to ensure you have good contact with clean metal, and before you disconnect the cables after a successful start, switch on loads (heater fan, heated rear window, etc) in the car with bad battery. This will help to reduce the effect of any voltage spike caused by breaking the circuit, which could otherwise damage voltage-sensitive electronic systems.

makeminefreedom says:

I have another tip. Don't allow the disabled vehicle's driver to use cheap cables or to make the connections himself. I had someone with a sob story hook up his cables in reverse. I was lucky that he didn't blow out my alternator.

alienasshunter forrealz says:

I use this same idea to torture people just with nuts

DAVID RIX says:

Good video but you didnt say that after the bad battery starts,if you have to stop the good battery car from running whilst the bad battery is running, please confirm on this✌️✌️✌️🇬🇧🇬🇧

Brian W says:

Very well done. Just to add, always check the tightness and condition of the battery connections. A loose connection could be the cause of the problem.

Saifon Lawrence says:

I found this video to be electrifying!!!

David Carman says:

Perfect! Thank you!

Ron Wood says:

Never stand between the two cars I learned the hard way

Seal & Seba says:

So you never connect the negative cable on the disabled vehicle during the whole process?
